Now that summer is really over and the days are getting shorter, colder and wetter again, it is time to make the inside of the house cosier again. Warm lighting, candles and autumn decoration contribute to this. An autumn flower arrangement instantly brightens up your interior. Especially if you choose flowers in autumn colours from a warm colour palette presented on one of our Portuguese bowls. An advantage of a flower arrangement is that it lasts longer than a bunch of flowers, so you will enjoy it for longer. Moreover, it is great fun to give a homemade autumn arrangement in a pretty bowl as a gift to friends or family when visiting, on birthdays or housewarming parties. Read on and take a quick look for our do it yourself autumn flower arrangement!
What do you need to make an autumn flower arrangement?
- Decorative Portuguese bowl (view our selection here)
- Oasis
- Large bin
- Knife
- Pruning shears
- Moss
- A selection of flowers (and possibly sprigs)
As can be seen, you don't need much to make a flower arrangement in a pretty ceramic bowl. We chose orange and yellow flowers and berries. For the filling and to make the flower arrangement more playful, we chose green airy twigs, fern leaves. We think the (dark) orange and yellow colours go well with autumn. For your own flower arrangement, choose a colour palette that makes you happy and that you think goes well with the colours and textures in your own interior.
What flowers do you use for a floral arrangement?
You can choose all kinds of flowers for making your own flower arrangement. Since we are now going to make ourselves an autumn piece, we chose an autumnal colour palette. Besides different kinds of flowers in this colour palette (alternating light and dark), we also chose some moss to cover the oasis and to emphasise autumn as a background. Now if you find it difficult to select a nice selection together, first get inspired by different flower arrangements (like ours in this blog or) on Pinterest. Did you know that you can also follow us on Pinterest for more inspiration (@nlunro)? If you need advice, you can of course also go to a flower shop in your area and get inspired and advised on the spot with the (seasonal) offerings available at the time. Sometimes you shouldn't make things too difficult for yourself either 😉 .
You can choose to choose some of the same flowers so you can repeat them in your flower arrangement. But you can also choose all different flowers. The difference creates unity and lets your creativity shine through. Of course, a mix of both options is also possible. It all depends on what you like. A beautiful and attractive floral arrangement looks different for everyone. To give you a guideline, you could stick to the 3:5:8 rule in floral design.
What is the 3:5:8 rule in floral design?
In floristry, this rule refers to using 3 different types of flowers, 5 green stems/green leaves and 8 flowers to fill the floral arrangement. This rule was created because it provides balance and harmony in putting together a floral arrangement. This is because the rule creates a balanced rhythm of repetition that makes for a beautiful whole.
How to make an autumn flower arrangement?
Making your own (autumn) flower arrangement actually starts with the preparation. As described above, it starts with finding inspiration and putting together the selection of flowers and green leaves to shape the autumn piece. Once you have all the supplies you need and have managed to find some free time ⌚️😃, you can start putting together your autumn piece.
How to start flower arranging autumn piece?
Before you can start making the flower arrangement, it is important to start by cutting the piece of oasis to shape. For example, we have our green bowl use which has a round shape so for this the oasis also had to be round and sloping to fit nicely into the bowl. Our deep oval bowls (in the cream, blue and green) are also great for making a floral arrangement. When the oasis is cut to shape, immerse it in water. For this, you can use any container in which you let the oasis rest for a while. It is important that the oasis absorbs the water well, as it has to make sure that the flowers and greenery in your flower arrangement get enough water to stay fresh and beautiful for a long time. Soaking for half an hour is fine, just make sure that all sides of the oasis are thoroughly wet.
How to arrange flowers in oasis?
Place the oasis in your chosen decorative bowl and cover it with moss (if you have chosen this). After this, cut the flowers, twigs and (possibly) the green leaves short until there is still a small stalk on them. Next, we started inserting some statement flowers to give them a nice and prominent place in our autumn flower arrangement. Then we inserted the less striking flowers and rounded them off with sprigs with berries and the pieces of fern to complete the arrangement. You can also choose to start with the greenery and the filler flowers first and then accent your arrangement with the statement flowers. You can always rearrange your flowers until you are happy with the arrangement.
